Not many people can tell but I’m half Jamaican, and I grew up with a lot of music in the house. On a Sunday my dad would play songs loud on his record player, and later on the new high-fi system everyone wanted in the 90s. Then, when I hung out with my Mum she would be blasting all of her 80’s hits in the car like Earth Wind and Fire and the classic Soul / RnB music that you could sing to at the top of your lungs. I’ve been loving this 80’s mix, particularly in these sections here and here. There was no shortage of music in my childhood. When I moved back to London I got to hang out with my Auntie who played reggae music so loud that my internal organs would vibrate. Later in life, I was introduced to bands like Phantogram, Youth Lagoon, Purity Ring and I adore them!
Last week I came across this song which I cannot stop playing. It’s a sub-genre of conscious hip-hop mixed with mellow vibes which blends the two worlds I talked about perfectly together. I’ve been absolutely loving all of the mixes in this genre and have been saving them to my Lofi HipHop playlist.
Music for me has always been private, in a weird way it’s my shield from the world. When I’m going to places and don’t want to be disturbed I’m listening to music. And, I’ll annoying need to find the right song to get ready to. My Summer in London playlist is perfect for getting ready….well for me anyway!
I’ve finally gone through and categorized my playlist for the moods/genres I’ve been loving lately and aim to populate each playlist with 10 – 15 songs each. Soundcloud is an amazing place for people who have an eclectic taste in music. I love all the mixes and fusions, so you know this is where I hang out.
