DIY Leather Pillow

May 18, 2017

After seeing this leather cushion, I thought it would make a really nice addition to my apartment. I couldn’t afford the price tag of the cushion at CB2 $189 so I decided to make my own. I headed to my local fabric store in Vancouver, in hopes of finding similar material and sure enough I did! The material cost me $12.50 for 1m, and then I bought matching thread for under a $1.

Here is the material I bought below which is pretty close in colour

I measured out the cushion and cut so I had 3 pieces of material. My front panel was 20×20, my two back panels were both 20×15.

Then I just drew a massive square, because I really didn’t want to mess it up. Ideally you’d want a large cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter of precision. I just used what I had, but if you are going to make more than one / keep up with cushions and DIY home furnishings that I would recommend investing. It will probably cost you around $20 from Amazon or Michaels.

Once I was happy I pinned all my pieces down. Then stared sewing carefully around the edge, it’s much easier to spin the fabric around the needle when you reach each corner. After you’ve sewn all the sides up, close of your stitches and cut off any excess fabric ( what’s left outside the drawn lines) – Then you’re ready to turn your cushion inside out an voila!
